Independent Professional Adviser

The use of an independent professional adviser/Authorising Engineer for water services is becoming increasingly popular, particularly in hospitals, healthcare environments and other large institutional and commercial facilities where the risks from Legionnaires’ disease, Pseudomonas and other waterborne pathogens require expert management to ensure compliance with the law.

In May 2016 the Department of Health released updated versions of HTM 04-01 Parts A, B and C. The much anticipated documents bring the HTM 04-01 up to date from the previous 2006 versions and now compliment the ACoP L8 and HSG 274 Part 1-3 released in 2013/14.

The HTM 04-01 recommends that a Water Safety Group (WSG) is created, a multidisciplinary group formed to undertake the commissioning and development and ongoing management of the Water Safety Plan (WSP).

The HTM 04-01 advises appointing an independent professional adviser/Authorising Engineer to support the Water Safety Group (WSG). See HTM 04-01 Part B, paragraphs 6.6 and 6.8.
